Royals merchandise just as hot as team

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Playoff-starved fans are eagerly snapping up Royals merchandise and dreaming of T-shirts emblazoned with the words "2014 AL Central Division winner."

Hats and T-shirts are especially popular at the team store at Kauffman Stadium. Brett Salzenstein, who runs the store, said gear is disappearing five times faster than normal.

"We've had big crowds. Everyone is coming to the team store to shop. Everyone is excited at the K and wearing Royals merchandise," Salzenstein said.

Fan Christian Spitz is already saving up to buy postseason clothing.

"I'm 100 percent confident that we will make the playoffs. I know we will," he said.

And the team's success is giving a big time boost to the bottom lines of some local T-shirt companies.

Charlie Hustle owner Chase McAnulty, of Overland Park, is just trying to spread his passion for Kansas City.

"Building local companies is what really builds a community, and to be a part of that is an amazing thing," he said.

McAnulty's Charlie Hustle brand has come a long way since moving out of his parents' basement. Now, the first place Royals are motivating the community to buy.

"It is crazy just to keep up, a lot of our stores are out within a week," he said.

Trademarked logos, like the Royals, generate money for Major league Baseball. Even the money from shirts sold inside the stadium go into a revenue sharing pool for all MLB teams.

"Those people that are designing those don't have the feeling of what it's like to be here in Kansas City," said Zach Smith with Flyover, an apparel company that offers authentic Kansas City shirts.

Charlie Hustle and other local companies, like Flyover, sell Kansas City "inspired" t-shirts without the MLB copyright, so they keep their profits local.

"Our shirts are homegrown, designed by people from Kansas City who live here in Kansas City and are part of that buzz that is happening," Smith said.

Both companies say specific events inspire new designs, meaning if the Royals are playing in October, customers could see some new designs.
