DOUGLAS COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

Washburn University is mourning the loss of one of its employees.

Cal Melick, 66, who was a public services librarian at Washburn, was struck and killed while riding his bike near Clinton Lake in Douglas County on Wednesday.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office made the official identification Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff's office said Melick was riding his bike on North 950 Road, southwest of Lawrence, when he was struck and killed by an oncoming truck. That truck, driven by 69-year-old Werner Anderson, was in the process of passing another vehicle at the time, according to a preliminary investigation.

Anderson was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The sheriff's office said finished reports on the accidents will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for review, adding, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Melick's family and friends."

This is the second tragedy to hit the Washburn family in recent months. Just last June, the university's head baseball coach died while trimming trees at his Granville, KS home.
