Caroline father dies from injuries in Route 1 crash

Posted: Updated:

A Caroline father has died and his two children are in the hospital from injuries in a Tuesday four-car crash on Route 1 in Hanover.

Floyd Robinson Jr., 41, has died from his injuries. His family says his two children 11-year-old Teshawn and six-year-old Tiara are in the hospital. But the family says doctors tell them the children will be okay.

The family says you never saw Floyd without his children. On Tuesday, they were in the car together on Route 1 in Hanover County. In a moment, this family was changed forever.

"Right now I'm just numb," said his mother Gwendolyn Robinson. "I don't know what to say because I'm still in a state of shock."

Gwendolyn says her son was dead by the time they got to the hospital.  Her grandchildren are recovering, but don't yet know about their father's death.

"The baby girl is in intensive care, but the son, he's doing pretty good," she said.

Robinson was taking a left turn on Washington Highway near Lewistown Road around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit from behind by a van, according to the Hanover Sheriff's Office. Robinson and his two children, were not wearing their seatbelts and were all thrown from the vehicle by the impact. A third vehicle trying to avoid the crash swerved and hit Robinson's car, while a fourth vehicle struck Robinson as he lay in the road.

Now, members are promising to help raise these children who are now without a father.

"His daughter, she's my all in all because me and her have a real good bond," said Mary Alex, the children's great-grandmother.

They're sharing memories.

"He kept everybody laughing all the time and I'm going to miss him very much," Alex said.

And most of all, they're relying on faith.

"I know God and God don't let no one down," Gwendolyn said. "There's nothing He can't heal, in time."

Funeral plans are still being worked out.

Charges are pending in the crash, which is still under investigation. The other drivers had minor injuries.

Robinson was a custodian at Bowling Green Elementary where he got to see his children every day
