Flash flood watch in effect for Phoenix metro area

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A flash flood watch remains in effect in the Phoenix area and other parts of south-central and southwestern Arizona a day after monsoon storm runoff closed some streets and required rescues of people from stranded vehicles

The National Weather Service says the flash flood watch is in effect until 8 a.m. MST Wednesday because of possible flooding of washes, creeks and drainage areas.

Authorities say at least 16 people were rescued Tuesday evening from vehicles stuck in flooded streets in Phoenix. Parts of the Tucson area also got heavy rain, and the storm downed trees and utility poles in Tempe.

Flights at Sky Harbor International Airport were delayed and 2,400 customers in Tempe lost power.
