Deputies shoot, kill mentally ill man inside Lenawee County home

Posted: Updated:
LENAWEE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Lenawee County Sheriff says a deputy shot and killed a man suffering from mental illness inside his home Tuesday evening in Fairfield Township.

Deputies from the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on the 12000 block of Treat Highway around 8:15 Tuesday night to enforce a court order for hospitalization.  The order was for a 54-year-old male who was suffering from mental illness.

Responding deputies were reportedly told by family members that the subject was paranoid and delusional and trying to barricade himself.  Deputies were allowed into the man's residence where the man was armed with a shotgun.

The sheriff says after the man ignored repeated verbal commands to lower the weapon, he pointed the shotgun at the three deputies, who fired in self-defense.  The man was struck and, after life-saving measures were performed, pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with the Michigan State Police were requested to the scene and will be conducting an official investigation into the shooting.

"The detectives will go ahead and interview everybody who was at the scene to get a comprehensive picture of what happened," explained Lt. Tony Cuevas of the Michigan State Police. "Part of their investigation is kind of looking at the deputies decision-making process because everything is done split-second."

The name of the deceased man is being withheld at this time.  The three deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
