PESHKHABOUR, IRAQ (CNN) - At a bridge connecting Iraq and Syria, refugees cross over with their families, children and belongings.

A humanitarian crisis in northern Iraq continues as residents flee the ISIS offensive along the Sinjar Mountain.

Thousands of people have fled across the Iraqi Kurdish border into Syria, and then they cross back into safer areas of Iraq.

The women, men, children and elderly carrying only the clothes on their backs travel hours to take refuge along the river banks.

Meanwhile, ISIS fighters are making new gains in their deadly march across Iraq.

Central Command says U.S. forces "successfully" conducted an airstrike on Tuesday against an ISIS mortar position north of Sinjar.

And the U.S. could be sending as many as 75 more military advisers to Iraq.

The United States hopes the newly designated prime minister of Iraq can form a cabinet quickly and build a united front against ISIS rebels.
