A Kansas Bureau of Investigation's independent review of the death of a man held at the Johnson County Adult Detention Center in Olathe reveals more information about how he died.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, the sheriff's office said 30-year-old Matthew C. Worsham, of Overland Park, was found unresponsive when custody staff arrived to escort him to the facility infirmary. Officials successfully resuscitated him, but Worsham later died at the hospital.

The KBI released their findings in a press release:

“The investigation and autopsy determined that Mr. Worsham died of acute ethanol withdrawal. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation presented the investigation to the Johnson County Attorney's Office where it was decided that there was insufficient evidence to support any criminal charges concerning correctional or medical staff employed by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.”

The sheriff's office said Worsham was serving a 48-hour sentence through the Leawood Municipal Court for DUI and was scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday when he experienced a medical episode. He was released, according to the court order, after being taken to Olathe Medical Center.
