Salem woman gives CPR to pet bearded dragon, saves its life

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Sherrie Dolezal, of Salem, saved the life of her great-grandson's pet bearded dragon on Tuesday.

Dolezal cares for nearly two dozen lizards at her home in Salem.

"People are always flagging me down so their kids can see them or they can see them," Dolezal said.

She also operates a bearded dragon rescue. She says many people adopt the dragons when they are small but don't know how to take care of them when they grow. She then ends up taking care of them herself.

After coming home from running errands on Tuesday, she noticed that one lizard, named Del Sol, was unconscious in their swimming pool. Dolezal, being a former nurse, knew exactly what to do.

"The first thing I did was turn him upside down and started shaking him," Dolezal said, "I just started pounding him on his back, you know, and then I started doing chest compressions."

She then performed CPR on the bearded dragon. Dolezal thought that she had lost Del Sol but just as her grandson was coming over, he started breathing again.

Dolezal then put him on a heating pad and he is now doing fine.
