Overland Park, Merriam fire departments to merge

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

The Overland Park and Merriam fire departments are merging in 2015.

The Overland Park Fire Department will provide firefighting, fire investigation, training and fire code enforcement services for Merriam following approval of an agreement by the Overland Park City Council on Monday night. Merriam's City Council previously approved the agreement.

The two cities say the partnership will save them money. Merriam officials estimate it may save half a million dollars over 10 years. Overland Park fire officials estimate the city will save $120,000 per year in contract costs.

In the arrangement, Merriam's 21 fire department employees will become part of Overland Park Fire. The city of Merriam will retain ownership of the fire station and apparatus.

The partnership will add Advanced Life Support First Response to northern Overland Park and Merriam.
