KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A heads up for fans heading to the Kansas City Chiefs first preseason game on Thursday night.
Changes to the Arrowhead Stadium parking operation for the 2014 season will be in effect after a significant, encompassing review of traffic and parking issues facing fans on game day.
"We hired an independent consultant last year, SP+ Gameday, and they do parking plans for the Super Bowl, for the Olympics. So we felt like they were a good expert to go with," said David Young, the Chiefs vice president of stadium operations.
Basically, all traffic will flow in a counter-clockwise direction around Arrowhead Stadium. Gold and red parking passes will no longer be lot-specific.
"When you're parking 20,000-plus cars certainly you can't get them in with the snap of a finger, especially with tomorrow night being a Thursday night game. Rush hour plays a big factor into it, so we ask fans to arrive early," said Jayne Martin, the Chiefs director of fan experience.
Crews will get drivers to the nearest gold and red parking areas to the gate where they drive in.
Individuals who wish to park multiple cars nearby in the same lot are encouraged to arrive through the same gate entrance at the same time in order to secure close parking spots.
Only guests with prepaid parking passes will be allowed to enter through Gate 5, the entrance near the Chiefs practice facility. There will be no cash parking at Gate 5 due to heavy traffic congestion.
"We really encourage people to purchase a prepaid parking pass. They can purchase it for $27 by contacting the Chiefs Ticket Office or by contacting the customer relations department," Martin said. "Purchasing a prepaid parking pass not only saves you $3, but it also helps expedite the entry into the stadium."
"Part of the program that we've put in place is a large signage package. So that was one of the enhancements that we heard from our fans is we need more signage, we need to hear and understand where we need to go," Young said.
Prepaid parking can be purchased for $27 at the Chiefs ticket office or by calling 816-920-4237.
General parking on game day will be $30 at Gates 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
The Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals at 7 p.m.
