Gunmen rob dog walkers on west side of Plaza

Posted: Updated:

Authorities are investigating after two people were robbed at gunpoint outside an apartment building in a West Plaza neighborhood.

The two were walking their dog.

Police are working to determine if the robbers are the same shotgun-toting crooks who robbed two groups at Brookside Park.

Kansas City police were called about 10 p.m. Monday to the area of West 45th Street and Madison Avenue.

The two victims told police that they were walking a dog and were approached from behind by two men who ordered them to the ground at gunpoint.

The thieves took two iPhones and a wallet before fleeing.

No injuries have been reported.

A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. They are described as young, likely teens, armed and dangerous. Some have been described as wearing cargo shorts and T-shirts.

Police are warning residents to be vigilant, especially if out at night. People should be aware of their surroundings and travel in groups. But being in a group didn't protect the park goers.

The area where Monday night's incident took place is often used by residents to walk to and from the Plaza.

"With Madison right there, you get a lot of traffic coming through," neighbor Chris Frantze said. "I mean that's very surprising."

Some residents said they would be watching over their shoulder more and walk back from the Plaza before nightfall.
