Some Kansas City voters running into problems at polling place

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It is election day on both sides of the state line, as people cast their ballots on heated races, major tax issues and much more.

The polls have only been open for a few hours but already people are running into some problems.

The problems happened at Gregg Tabernacle AME Church at 1812 E. 37th St. It caused some people to walk away without voting early Tuesday morning.

Shawn Kieffer, director for the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners, said the problem was that the polling station opened at least half an hour late.

This frustrated some voters so much they took off without casting a ballot.

Kieffer said officials are looking into why this happened.

"It is very disappointing, and we're hoping those voters will come back this afternoon and try and vote again," he said.

He said besides that, everything else has gone smoothly at the more than 150 other polling places.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James cast his vote just after 7 a.m. at the National Archives regional facility in Kansas City on Pershing Avenue.

James is encouraging people to get out and vote too because many of the issues will have a big impact on Kansas City, especially the street car question.

Wyandotte and Johnson counties say they haven't had any voting issues so far.

Johnson County says the number of people coming out to the polls was about the same as the last election cycle.

The polls close in Kansas and Missouri at 7 p.m.
