OTTAWA, KS (KCTV) -

Flames destroyed a 147-year-old Ottawa church on Monday morning, and officials are working to determine the cause.

Church members woke up to the sound of sirens and rushed to the Bethany Chapel Baptist Church at 131 S. Poplar St. Ottawa's fire department rushed to the blaze about 5:30 a.m., and it took two hours to extinguish the flames that engulfed the church.

No one was hurt.

Churchgoers who watched the flames devour the building were saddened and remembered  weddings, funerals, baptisms and other moments experienced inside the building.

"It's not just a building," said Teresia Templeton, who was baptized at the church, wed her husband at the church and saw her two sons baptized at the church. "The church is inside each and every one of us."

The theme of last week's Vacation Bible School was reconstruction. The church had insurance and plans to rebuild.

"We are going to be tested. We'll have trials. We'll have tribulations. We are going to be tested and tried," the Rev. Armogen Walker, the church pastor, said.

Other churches have offered Bethany Chapel facilities for them to use for worship services.
