WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

A 14 foot 2 inch, 2,300 pound great white shark named Katharine has been tracked swimming off of the North Carolina coast from late July into the first part of August.

Katharine, an immature female great white shark, has pinged off of the Wilmington coast since August 2. She is being tracked by the research group Ocearch.

She was originally tagged off Cape Cod, Massachusetts on Aug. 19, 2013, and named Katharine after Katharine Lee Bates, who wrote the song America The Beautiful.

A ping is determined when the tagged shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water and transmits a signal to a satellite over head. The transmission then sends back an estimated geo-location according to Ocearch.

The last time Katharine was in the area was mid December 2013. You can track her location here: http://www.ocearch.org/profile/katharine/

Katharine is not the only great white to have been tracked off the Carolina coast. Mary Lee, a 16 foot 2,500 pound shark, has pinged very close to area beaches, even making her way into the mouth of the Cape Fear River in November of 2012.

Mary Lee seems to be hanging out off of the South Carolina, Georgia coast between Savannah and Charleston. You can track her location here: http://www.ocearch.org/profile/mary_lee/
