Charity dog wash held for boy hoping to beat brain tumor

Posted: Updated:
BLUE SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) -

A 9-month-old boy fighting for his life needs the community's help.

Lucas Whitacre was born with a tumor in his brain that no one knew about until June.

In May, his parents said he started getting sick, so they took him to the hospital. Doctors kept trying different formulas to see what he would keep down but nothing was working.

At 9 months old, he only weighs 14 pounds. After numerous tests, doctors later found the massive tumor.

Lucas underwent surgery July 1 where doctors took about two-thirds of the tumor. During the surgery, his parents were worried Lucas wouldn't make it because of how weak he was.

However, he pulled through and is doing OK. He is now undergoing chemotherapy.

His parents have down sized their home and the bills are piling up.

Lucas' family and friends are throwing a dog wash fundraiser at The Ideal Paw, 1218 NW 7 Highway, in Blue Springs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The cost is $15-30, depending on size of dog. Dogs will be washed, toenails clipped and ears cleaned. All the money raised will help pay for Lucas' medical bills.

Friends have also started a Go Fund Me account to help raise money. Click here to donate online.
