Family upset over UPS mishandling dog's death

Posted: Updated:
AGENCY, MO (KCTV) -

UPS is apologizing after a driver killed a family's beloved dog, and the family says the driver completely mishandled the pooch's unfortunate death.

Buckley was a boxer who loved the Allen family and they adored him. The family rescued the dog as a pup and loved him for eight years.

"He loved to lick you right in the face as soon as he saw you. He was so excited to say, 'Hi!' or to give kisses," April Allen said.

April Allen, husband Travis and their 2 and 4-year-old sons live in a rural area of Agency near St. Joseph. The family had an electronic collar for Buckley. The invisible fence allowed him to roam their circle driveway and front yard, which isn't near any major roads.

While making a delivery to the family recently, a driver for UPS ran over and killed the 65-pound animal.

The driver didn't try to use the telephone number listed on the package. Instead, the driver put a note on the family's front door. The plain piece of white paper didn't have the company's logo and wasn't on company letterhead.

The family is haunted by Buckley's last moments. They wonder if medical treatment could have saved him. They also wonder if they could have said their goodbyes.

"They should have called. It should have been more than just a note on the door," Travis Allen said.

Worse, the driver left the dog's body near the front door.

April Allen's sister found the dog but the family thinks quite easily an excited little boy could have ran up and found the dog.

The outraged family contacted UPS. The shipping company's insurance offered a settlement but only if they signed a waiver saying that they would not talk about what happened.

They refused.

"We don't want other people to go through this," April Allen said.

They want an apology and sympathy from the company for their loss.

KCTV5 reached out to UPS. A company spokesperson issued the following statement:

We apologize for the unfortunate accident involving our customer's family pet. The driver involved will receive refresher training as would happen with any type of accident.
