Halls closes Plaza location; Crown Center store expanding

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

After almost 50 years on the Country Club Plaza, Halls has closed its doors.

The iconic department store closed at 5 p.m. Sunday as work continues on an expanded store at Crown Center.

All stores except the movie theater on the third floor of Crown Center have closed or moved as part of the Halls expansion. Shoppers will be able to overlook Crayola Cafe and into the fountain area.

"Very sad. It was kind of a ritual to come down here for the after Christmas sale," said P.J. Baker, who came to Halls as a child. "We hate to see some of these landmarks go away, but there will be something new to replace it."

Kelly Cole, president and CEO of Halls, said the Plaza store closing is the beginning of a new era. He sees the move not with sadness but as progress.

"It is a big deal. It is a big move ahead, but I think the people will see a really exciting new Halls when we open just after Labor Day," Cole said.

Cole is excited about the new 60,000 square-foot store, which is slated to open in September.

"There is great history here. We've grown up with many families in Kansas City, and we'll continue to grow up with them at Crown Center," Cole said.

The expansion will have a small cafe with light fare and coffee. Dressing rooms will be large enough to fit a small bed. The dressing rooms for men will have flat-screen TVs.

"Halls is very proud to be the hometown store in Kansas City and we want to promise the community that we are going to continue our high level of community service," Cole said.

Jack Henry, another long-time store on the Plaza, closed its doors at the beginning of June.
