Police make massive marijuana bust in Grundy County

Posted: Updated:

A sheriff's deputy hunting rabbits stumbled onto something else entirely. He discovered more than 30,000 marijuana plants in Grundy County.

The plants were doused in diesel and burned in front of the Grundy County Sheriff's Office.

Community members say this is something they just had to see for themselves.

"We usually check out books, but I'm checking out marijuana burning today," said librarian Ann Nunley.

She said she came running from across the street to see what was going on.

"I thought, 'I'm going to go see what's happening at the jail.' That's a lot of marijuana," Nunley said.

Since Wednesday night, officials have been combing an area off Taylor Road. They say the marijuana could be worth upwards of $2 million.

Nunley said she's glad this is now out of her community.

"I'm glad they're getting it off the streets," she said.

Officials say the investigation is still ongoing into who planted these plants.
