TOPSFIELD, MA (WCVB/CNN) – An ax? came within inches of a woman sitting in the passenger seat of a following car, with the sharp blade slicing right through the windshield and lodging into the dashboard.
"I suppose you could say the worst possible piece of debris you could think of coming," Massachusetts State Trooper Joseph Risteen said.
Massachusetts State Police say that the ax flew off a landscaping truck, traveling down Interstate 95 through Topsfield, MA Wednesday morning.
As it hit through the highway and then spun through the air, the driver in the car following it had no time to react.
"If it had any more inertia behind it or if they were traveling a little faster, one can speculate the ax would gone through and struck," Risteen said.
Investigators say the man driving the truck left it sitting on the hood when he left a job. Somehow, he never noticed it.
State police say it’s a frightening lesson for anyone hauling tools or cargo.
"This time of year, we see it an awful lot. It's usually beach chairs and coolers and kayaks and canoes and things like that,” Risteen said. “Lesson from the operator of the truck that lost the act is that it's incumbent upon everybody to secure cargo on their vehicle."
