(NASA TV/CNN) – NASA has set a new record: the Opportunity rover, which landed on Mars in 2004, has now driven more than 25 miles.

The distance is the farthest anything has driven somewhere other than Earth.

A Russian lunar rover held the previous record. The Lunokhod 2 operated for less than five months, but it drove more than 24 miles on Earth’s moon.

As Opportunity approached the mileage record earlier this year, the rover team honored the Russian rover by naming a crater on Mars the Lunokhod 2.
