(CNN) - A Texas lawyer is suing General Motors on behalf of more than 600 people injured or killed in crashes allegedly caused by ignition switch defects.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New York. According to the Detroit Free Press, it names 29 people who died and 629 people who were injured.

All of the victims were involved in crashes after GM emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2009. However, not all of the victims may be eligible for compensation.

The auto company has a compensation fund set up to pay victims of the 2.6 million vehicles originally recalled for ignition switch issues. Most of the vehicles listed in the lawsuit were not part of that recall.
