(CNN) - West Africa is dealing with the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record as international health organizations struggle to contain it.

Two Americans working in the region tested positive for the deadly virus that has been spreading since March. There have been at least 759 confirmed cases in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia in the last four months - 467 of them have died.

Doctors said the Ebola virus does not spread in the air simply, like the flu. It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids or infected animals.

While the virus is able to live on its own outside an infected person for some time, experts said it was "fragile." Soap, detergent, heat and disinfectant can kill it.

In the U.S., experts said we should be aware of the threat but not fearful. There have not been any cases of Ebola being spread to a developed country.

Doctors said that is because people generally transmit the infection when they are very sick, and people in the U.S. have access to clean hospitals with proper infection control.
