(CNN) - Israel's military operation in Gaza is targeting a sophisticated network of tunnels used by Hamas militants to attack the Jewish state.

Israeli authorities say some of those tunnels were built with concrete meant for the construction of civilian homes and schools.

Israel says it cost Hamas about $1 million to build each tunnel.

The Israeli ambassador to the UN accuses Qatar of providing Hamas with the financing to build the underground network.

Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah, Qatari foreign minister, disputes the charge.

"Well, Qatar does not support Hamas. Qatar support the Palestinian,” al Attiyah said. “We are always - we reach out to the - our people of Palestine; our - we consider them our family, for humanitarian assistance. We are building schools, hospitals, roads. If you think that this is tool for terrorism, then I don't know what we should call what Israel is doing with the Gazan people."

When asked where Hamas is getting the aid for tunnels and rockets, the foreign minister responded, "You should ask Hamas on this."

Meanwhile, despite calls for a new cease-fire, fighting intensified in Gaza on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Palestinians say more than two dozen people died as rockets or mortars struck a refugee camp, a hospital and the center of Gaza City.

The Israeli military reported that 10 of its soldiers were killed on Monday.
