Security preparations underway for Obama's visit

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Preparations inside Uptown Theater are underway for President Barack Obama's big arrival Wednesday morning.

Executives with the theater say getting a ticket to see the commander in chief was a bigger feat than any concert it has hosted.

Obama will be in the city Tuesday evening, then will speak about 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Uptown Theater. The Wednesday event is free and open to the public, though tickets are required.

The ticket giveaway started Monday morning at 9 a.m. Some people even camped out overnight to ensure their seat for Obama's Wednesday speech on the economy.

"When she was born, President Obama was running for president, and we went to see him at Municipal Auditorium on a snowy day. And I said when she gets older we would go and see him again," John Huthinson said.

In two hours' time, the line had died down and the last ticket was distributed.

"I was lucky enough to be the last guy to walk in and get a ticket to see Obama," James Holt said.

Uptown Theater owner Larry Sells hosted then-Sen. Obama in 2006. He said Monday's crowd beats out any other rock star the venue has hosted.

"We haven't had this large a turnout for our concerts, although we've had concerts that come close," Sells said. "We have rock stars, and now we have Barack-stars, and now Barack beat the rest of them."

Obama's speech is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday. The doors will open at 8:30 a.m.

"The one thing about this theater is that it was the first run theater outside downtown Kansas City, and it was geared for and marketed to working people," Sells said.

Before his trip to the metro, Obama is also focusing on job training. In his weekly weekend address, he talked about the importance of training people with specific skills.

He will also visit a community college in California this week that is re-training workers for healthcare jobs.
