KBI, police probe possible homicide in Lawrence

Posted: Updated:

Authorities are investigating a possible homicide after a female was found dead in a Lawrence home.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation along with Lawrence police continue to investigate the suspicious circumstances of the victim's death.

Officers were called to a home in the 1100 block of New York Street about 1:15 p.m. Saturday in reference to a female found dead.

Police haven't released the name of the woman, but the people on in the neighborhood know her by her first name, "Chris."

They knew her as a kind woman who would help anyone.

Destini Howard grew up next door to the house that was surrounded by homicide detectives Sunday afternoon. The woman who lived there was a special friend.

"We would go down and garden with her. She was really nice to everybody. She opened her house to anybody," Howard said. "Our house had caught on fire. When that happened, she let us stay with her for a little while. She was really nice."

Other neighbors, like Tricia Klein, paint a similar picture.

"She has always been extremely kind to me," Klein said.

Neighbors say the woman recently battled some health problems. They find it hard to believe someone would kill such a friendly person.

"It is very surprising, just really scary. The more it goes on, the more upsetting it is," Klein said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509 or Douglas County Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS.
