A gas station robbery lead police to a suspect who tried to take his own life.

The Missouri Highway Patrol was informed that Ray County 911 operators had received information from family members regarding a subject who was suicidal.

Troopers forwarded information to Gladstone police that the subject's cell phone had been pinged on Missouri Route 1 south of Highway 152.

A clerk from the Trex Mart gas station, located at 5801 N. Antioch Rd., called police about 9:30 p.m. Saturday and reported that he had been robbed at gunpoint by a subject in a green Jeep Liberty.

The gunman demanded that the clerk turn on the gas pump for $60 worth of gas.

Police began to follow the man soon after he left the gas station. Officers initiated a car stop in the 5600 block of MO Route 1 at 9:34 p.m.

After the Jeep came to a stop, the officers observed the driver raise a handgun, point it at his head and discharge the weapon.

Officers on the scene contacted the driver and found him unresponsive. They rendered first aid. An ambulance transported the driver to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Gladstone police continue to investigate the incident.
