KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A family is asking for prayers as they mourn the loss of a young boy killed while riding his bike on U.S. Highway 71.

Police say 12-year-old Jawuan Bettis was struck by a car about 2 a.m. Saturday while crossing on a red light at 55th Street.

The boy's struggle to survive came to an end Tuesday.

"Everybody has been up. No one has slept," said Shirley Stevenson, Jawuan's great aunt.

Jawuan's mother, Julia Bettis, has had the most sleepless nights. For days, she kept hoping her young son would recover.

"He was twitching his body and everything. Then (doctors) said, 'go ahead and squeeze your mama's hand and let her know you're here.' He squished my hand a little bit," she said.

His family says his mom was at work, and Jawuan was home with his two teenaged siblings when he snuck out.

"He's a good kid that wants to be with the kids across the street, the bad kids. Well, come on let's ride our bikes. Well, he doesn't want to be called a turkey," Stevenson said.

Why is something they can only guess. It is an answer the boy's mother will never have now that he is gone.

But at this point, Bettis wants just one thing.

"Just one thing ... for everybody's prayer for us to be stronger," she said.

The driver in that crash did stop and has not been accused of any crime.
