A local mother is in the national spotlight for defending her transgender daughter.
"My daughter, then my 4-year-old son, said these words to me, 'Mom, you know I am really a girl right? I am a girl on the inside,'" Debi Jackson said.
The YouTube video of her sharing her story during a Listen to Your Mother talk has already been viewed over 230,000 times in just a week and a half. The speech is one she said she felt compelled to make after her family, and especially her child, came under fire in the public.
Jackson says she never thought her speech would go viral, but now her words are reaching out to hundreds of thousands of people concerned about the transgender movement.
"She changed her outward appearance from male to female and started living as her true gender when she was 4," she said in the speech.
Until last week, Jackson's identity remained a secret.
"We do worry about our daughter's privacy. This is her story and her life," she said.
But when she stood before the small crowd, she told that story about her young daughter, A.J.
"We just want to promote understanding. We just want to educate people a little bit," she said.
Jackson still wants to protect her daughter's identity, but now that her story is out, she hopes to help other families going through the same thing.
"We wanted to be able to give other people hope and let them know that if you're out there, you're not alone," Jackson said.
She also hopes to combat misconceptions about transgendered people.
"When I tell my daughter's story I hear the same uninformed comments over and over again. So I'd like to address a few of those now. One, we are Liberals pushing a gay agenda. Nope, sorry, I'm a Conservative Southern Baptist Republican from Alabama," Jackson says in the video.
Jackson's speech was used as part of a series for the Listen to Your Mother organization which advertises that they give motherhood a microphone.
