Chase in Wyandotte County ends in fiery crash

Posted: Updated:

A man fleeing authorities crashed into another vehicle carrying two teens, authorities said Wednesday afternoon.

Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office deputies tried to stop the driver of a car reported stolen in the county.

The chase was initiated about 2:40 p.m. and ended 11 minutes later. Authorities initially indicated the chase lasted about 45 minutes, but later said it was much less than that.

The chase started at Vista and Highland avenues and ended on Metropolitan near Interstate 635. The driver of the stolen vehicle exited I-635 and took the Metropolitan ramp too fast.

The driver hit a Chevy Tahoe with a 19-year-old and 13-year-old inside. Fortunately, they weren't seriously hurt.

The driver and passenger in the stolen vehicle both jumped out and ran. A 10-year-old boy got caught in the search for the suspects.

"My mom ... she actually got scared because she didn't really know what was going on," said Ricardo Valdez about what he saw after the collision.

The suspects in the Impala bailed, and one ran right past Ricardo's window, putting a deputy on his doorstep.

"He said that he needed to come search the house because he thought that he went inside there," Ricardo said.

Police caught the driver but are still looking for the passenger, authorities said.

Chopper5 was over the scene. The stolen black four-door car was charred after the fire and wound up in the middle of Metropolitan near South 42nd Avenue.

The silver Tahoe wound up off the curb partially in the grass with front end damage.

The northbound I-635 ramp to Metropolitan was closed for about two hours to allow for traffic investigators to complete their scrutiny of the scene, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
