RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond police are crediting Facebook with leading to an arrest in the theft of six copper planters from the Jefferson Hotel.

Police posted surveillance photos of a suspect and vehicle in the thefts on Monday at 1:16 p.m. Less than an hour later a Facebook fan called detectives and identified the suspect as Brandon R. Slaughter, police announced Wednesday on their Facebook page.

Slaughter, 26, later surrendered and was charged with grand larceny in the thefts last week at the landmark hotel.

"Though the Department has received several crime tips via Facebook previously, this is the first time detectives are aware of a direct link between a post and an arrest," the department posted. "Thank you Richmond!"

The six copper planters are worth around $15,000, according to Richmond Police.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the man's identity to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
