NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A night with friends turned tragic for a teenager who just graduated from high school a couple months ago.

Police said Deshaun Sawyers, 18, a recent graduate of Blackman High in Murfreesboro, was killed outside the Exxon Tiger Mart on Harding Place late Monday night.

"He was only 18, he did not get a chance," said his cousin, Kayla Crosby. "I'm 21 and I haven't had a chance yet, but he didn't get a breath of life."

According to police, Sawyers and four friends were driving from Murfreesboro to a party in Brentwood when Sawyers told the driver that he needed to meet someone at the Exxon.

Sawyers got out of the car, walked to the side of the building and got into an SUV, possibly a silver GMC Envoy.

Witnesses told police they immediately heard gunshots and Sawyers ran from the SUV and collapsed in front of the store.

He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Sawyers was planning on following in his brother's footsteps and enlisting in the Army, according to family members.

"My cousin was a team player, there is nothing he wouldn't do for us, anybody, even the person who killed him," Crosby said.

Police believe the key to solving this case is finding the SUV involved in the shooting. They have released photos in the hopes of someone knowing who it belongs to.

"I need to know because my family is hurt," Crosby said.

Sawyers was supposed to be in court in Nashville on Aug. 20. He was arrested outside of Club X off Bell Road for being in possession of a gun while intoxicated. Club security originally called police because of a robbery attempt, according to the warrant, but it didn't say if Sawyers was involved.

Anyone with information about the murder of Sawyers or who recognizes the suspect SUV is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
