Bomb squad probes suspicious package in Shawnee driveway

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have reopened a stretch of Woodland Drive that was closed between Shawnee Mission Parkway and Johnson Drive while they investigated a suspicious package Sunday afternoon.

Ed Zeller found the package at the end of his driveway. Zeller said that the package looked like a pipe with glow sticks and electrical tape attached.

"It looked like an explosive," Zeller said.

When investigators arrived, they found two more just like it within a block of his home.

Shawnee Police Department Maj. Doug Orbin said the package was wrapped like a possible explosive device, so the Olathe bomb squad was called to investigate.

Shawnee Fire Department Fire Marshall Corey Sands said that Zeller did the right thing.

Zeller says the devices resemble homemade firework, and he doesn't believe whoever made them meant to harm anyone. However, he feels it's better to be safe than sorry.

The Shawnee fire and police departments are still investigating the case, but believe juveniles were involved in making the devices.

If you find an object that you don't know what it is, call authorities and allow them to investigate.
