LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a scam involving someone impersonating a deputy.

Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp says many residents have received calls from someone claiming to be a Lucas County deputy. The person tells them to make a payment so an outstanding warrant will go away. They request payments in the form of Green Dot cards.

"We do not make phone calls to folks to tell them they have an outstanding warrant or they owe money," said Sheriff Tharp. "We would never do that."

The sheriff says if you receive a call like that, you should hang up right away, then call 911 and report it.

"I think they would really want to prey on the seniors, so we have to take care of our families and make sure everyone is aware," Tharp said.

He says the impersonator has also posed as an Ottawa County deputy and a Toledo police officer.

The sheriff says no one has sent the scammer any money.
