Westwood buzzing about planned $70 million development

Posted: Updated:

A planned $70 million development in Westwood is all the buzz.

The development is projected to have a restaurant, retail shops and condos. The first section could open in late 2015 on a plot of land at 47th Street and Rainbow Boulevard.

Some small business owners hope a new mixed use development will increase sales.

"For my small business, it can give me a chance to grow and just to expand my business," said Andrew Herrick, who has owned and operated the Boulevard Barber Shop for four years. "If you don't have the growth, people want to move away. Once they start to move away that's when your neighborhood and community begins to fall apart."

Sally Sutera, who owns Sutera's Italian restaurant, concurred.

"It's traffic. It's people," Sutera said.

She doesn't oppose the project even though the first restaurant would be an Italian restaurant created by a local restaurant group.

But others are worried that the development won't sell all of the condos and they will be rented out.

Blair Tanner, owner of Woodside Health Club, hopes to develop an empty building and parking lot into a thriving location. The project would be done over three phases.
