INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A man is in an Independence jail charged with rape and sodomy, and police say it happened at a public park.

Police said Bryan K. Raines sexually assaulted a woman Saturday night in Brady Park. The victim was able to escape with help from witnesses.

The crime was a shock to neighbors, who say the area is generally safe.

"Kids walk back and forth to the park, and people are out there all the time. We've always felt really good here. I mean, it is really strange," said Julie Martin, whose backyard borders the park.

It was strange because a man with no clothes on came running through the clearing behind her house. She heard her dogs barking at him.

"We came outside to see what was going on with the dogs. When he came up, he didn't have any clothes on, right in the yard," Martin said.

Martin said the man looked as if he had hit his head. He stumbled and fell right outside her back door.

"He hadn't moved and just kind of rolled over once and just kind of laid there. The police started talking to him, then he acted like he wasn't really with it," she said.

Police said that man was Raines. They said earlier, he sexually assaulted a woman at the park, but Martin didn't see his victim.

"We really honestly didn't even know what had happened, because we didn't hear about it last night at all. We didn't hear about it until yesterday afternoon," she said.

Raines is being held on a $500,000 cash only bond, which was set by a judge during Raines' first court appearance Monday afternoon.
