SLOVIANSK, UKRAINE (CBS) – Ukraine's newly-appointed Defense Minister Valery Heletey said on Friday that his government forces defeated pro-Russian rebels following fighting in the village of Mikolaivka, near Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine.

Heletey said that during the operation more than 50 insurgents have been captured together with their commander and that there are citizens of Russia among the prisoners.

He also said that more than 70 insurgents were killed.

"I, together with the commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, Gen. Stepan Poltorak, have informed the president about the defeat of terrorists in the village of Mikolaivka, which is situated on the outskirts of Sloviansk," he said. "This is the first operation of such a scale where Ukraine's army, the National Guard and Battalion Kiev took part under the commandment of the Chief of the General Staff, Victor Muzhenko. We have used new tactics during the fight. During the operation more than 50 insurgents have been captured together with their commander under the nickname of Skorpion (scorpio). There are citizens of Russia amongst the prisoners. More than 70 insurgents were killed."

Friday's fighting centered on the outskirts of Sloviansk, a city in the Donetsk region that has been a key flashpoint in the fighting.
