Survey says road rage rises in the summer

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Summer is supposed to be the time to get out and enjoy time with family and friends, but apparently it also brings out the road rage in drivers.

Safeco Insurance says nearly 30 percent of motorists surveyed say they're more aggressive during the summer, especially around the holidays.

Many people KCTV5 spoke with agreed.

"I definitely agree. It seems like everybody is in a hurry to get to where they are going, afraid they are going to be late," Dee Perkins said.

"I think drivers are very aggressive and I notice it around the Plaza because I live here. I walk here and also drive here," said Donna Bodinson.

Many around the metro say they've also been a victim of road rage.

"I've had people come up behind me and lay on the horn when I'm at a stop," Perkins said.

The survey says that nearly four out of 10 drivers would act out negatively if they thought a parking spot was taken from them. Ray Massenberg with AAA said he's not surprised to hear about summertime's pushy drivers, but he wants everybody to know that their aggressive ways are not worth it.

"If you actually crunch the numbers and do the math, you know, driving at 80 (mph) instead of driving at 70 only gets you there a few minutes earlier," he said.

For those who get to the point where they feel the need to make that certain hand gesture with the middle finger, Massenberg says it's better to keep your cool.

"There's really no point in letting it rile you up," he said.

Other drivers even offered their own advice for calming down during stressful driving situations.

"I keep a far side book in my glove compartment so when I start feeling road rage, I pull that book out and look at it because it's just a quick look. It makes me laugh and calms me down," Christie Wilson said.

"I squeeze the steering wheel twice as hard. I keep my hands to myself," Perkins said.
