Man arrested after fleeing from police, hiding in home

Posted: Updated:

Police have arrested a man they say sped past them then drove off and eventually hid in a home.

Independence public information officer Tom Gentry said motorcycle officers were running radar in the area of East 31st Street and South Santa Fe when a driver flew past them, going about 70 miles per hour in a 25 miles-per-hour zone.

The incident began about 2:40 p.m.

Officers chased the driver, but lost track of him. After driving around for some time, Gentry said officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one they were chasing. They spotted a man slouched over in the front seat, apparently hiding.

Gentry said when the officers approached the vehicle, the driver took off again. He ultimately stopped and ran from the vehicle in the 19000 block of 14th Street. Police saw the driver and two female passengers run into a nearby home.

Police set up a perimeter, and the suspect finally came out after an armored SWAT team unit arrived and spoke to him over a loudspeaker.

Gentry said the suspect was arrested, and police believe he was wanted for other crimes.

No one was hurt, there were no accidents reported and there were no indications of any weapons.
