Charity fireworks stand recovering after thefts

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A fireworks stand raising money for a local charity says they are moving forward after a major setback last Fourth of July.

The two fireworks stands that raise money for Hillcrest Ministries have beefed up security to make sure what happened last year doesn't happen again.

Their fireworks stands are in Independence and Lee's Summit.

Last year, a security guard at the Independence tent was robbed at gun point. Thieves took his van and loaded it with thousands of dollars of fireworks.

Hillcrest Ministries is a 90-day housing program for homeless families and battered women.

The robbery took money away from the program and the amount of people they could help, but they hope to make up for it with community support this year.

"At Hillcrest, our focus is moving families from homelessness to self-sufficiency. There are all kinds of obstacles and challenges associated with that. That is what we do - solve problems and work through things," Director Cotton Sivils said.
