LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

The search is on for a homeless man wanted in connection with a Lawrence rape.

Police said Carlton Matthew Grass, 52, raped a woman on June 15 near a gas station at West Ninth and Louisiana streets.

He has recently been spotted in the area of West Ninth and Massachusetts streets, but since he is homeless, investigators said there is no telling where he could turn up.

Grass is well-known throughout the homeless community. He has gone by the names of "Smokey Eagle," "Carl Grass," "Carlos Bazon" and "Carlton Eagle" in the past.

"I've never really met him. He's never been at the shelter," said Brian Blevins, with the Lawrence Community Shelter.

Blevins said Grass has met several of the homeless people who are now staying there. They were shocked at the allegations.

"The peripheral conversations that I'm hearing from other people is that this is unlike him. He was probably under the influence or having mental health issues," Blevins said.

Blevins is now taking steps to keep the 125 guests at the shelter safe and making sure Grass stays away. He has posted wanted fliers throughout the shelter.

"We've got them posted around the building. All of our staff is very professional about keeping an eye out on who is here. They know every client, and they know who is not supposed to be here," he said.

Police said Grass may be getting around on a bicycle.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509.

Calls can also be made to the TIPS Hotline at 785-843-TIPS, where callers may remain anonymous and may qualify for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
