Residents displaced after electrical fire at Merriam apartment complex

MERRIAM, KS (KCTV) -

Several families in Merriam have to find another place to stay after their apartments caught fire.

Firefighters from Merriam and Overland Park were called just before 10 p.m. Monday to the Georgetown Apartments in the 7100 block of Eby Drive.

When crews arrived on the scene, a fire was reported in an electrical panel in the basement of a two-story apartment building.

Firefighters couldn't get inside the building to fight the fire right away because they had to wait for the electricity to be shut off.

Crews waited for an hour and a half for KCP&L crews to arrive to cut the electricity to the building.

Firefighters could have been electrocuted had they entered before.

The fire was quickly knocked down and placed under control about 11:50 p.m.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters did rescue a number of animals from the building.

It is believed that families in 16 units were displaced. Apartment management is working to relocate those residents.
