LA JOYA, TX (KRGV/CNN) – Texas officials have identified the remains of a body found along the border earlier this month.
The Hidalgo County, TX Sheriff’s office says the victim was an 11-year-old Guatemalan boy.
Sheriff Eddie Guerra says the boys have succumbed to the high temperatures as he tried to make his way across the border.
“The pathologist believes because of the way we found the body, it had no shirt, which indicates that the, that's a sign of heat stroke, depending on a toxicology report from the pathologist,” Guerra said.
The U.S. has been battling a humanitarian crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Thousands of unaccompanied minors have been streaming into the U.S. in the past few months along the southern border.
