COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Columbia fire crews successfully resuscitated a cat they discovered unresponsive during the search of a house following a fire in the Olympia community on Wednesday.

Firefighters quickly removed the cat from the house on Tryon Street and began life-saving efforts, including chest compressions and administering oxygen using a pet oxygen kit that had been donated to the department.

After several minutes, the cat, whose name is "Soldier," regained consciousness.

Firefighters cared for him until City of Columbia Animal Services took custody and its owner was located.

Fire officials said at last check Soldier was recovering.

In November 2012 Columbia Fire Department partnered with two Columbia citizens and Wagn'N O2 Fur Life® Program to provide a way for people to donate pet oxygen kits to the department.

Wagn'N O2 Fur Life was established in 2008 and has been providing these kits to fire departments through direct, sponsorship/gift and fellowship programs. The kits cost around $75 and contain specially designed animal oxygen masks and other materials that aide firefighters when they encounter a conscious or unconscious pet.

The Columbia Fire Department encourages you to visit www.petoxygenmasks.org to learn more about the Wag'N O2 Fur Life® Program and how to donate lifesaving pet oxygen kits to the Columbia Fire Department.  If you'd like to donate to the Columbia Fire Department,  go to www.petoxygenmasks.org, choose METHOD #2 to sponsor and under "Choose Options" select A Fire Department and then under "Department Information" type: Columbia SC Fire Department.
