MCALLEN, TX (KRGV/CNN) – The U.S. government plans to convert a warehouse in McAllen, TX into a processing center for unaccompanied children who enter the country illegally.
According to a city building permit, obtained by CNN, the facility will temporarily hold up to 1,000 children.
Floor plans show four separate pods, each with five holding cells. The plans also contain portable showers, toilets and laundry facilities.
U.S. authorities estimate between 60,000 and 80,000 children from Central America will arrive in the U.S. this year without a parent or guardian.
In an open letter, Homeland Security Jeh Johnson warned parents against sending their children illegally, emphasizing they will be charged and may be deported.
