Man found shot dead in Union Hill alley

Posted: Updated:

A man is found shot to death in an alley off the 800 block of North 21st Street in Union Hill Tuesday evening. Police say shots rang out after 5 p.m., in broad daylight.

Detectives are only classifying the shooting as a "death investigation" at this time. Officers completely blocked off the street and combed the area for clues. Families looked on from their porches, watching more deadly violence break out in the city, as summer begins.

"Just rapid fire, ‘pop, pop, pop, pop!'... maybe about six or seven times," described Earnest Littles, who heard the gunshots while sitting in his car.

The victim's body was left in plain view, until detectives swarmed the scene, minutes later.

"I walked up the alley, and that's when I saw the guy (the victim)," said another passerby.

Police say they are already making headway in the investigation.

"We are following up on strong leads, but nothing to release right now," said Lt. Daniel Minton, with the Richmond City Police Department.

The victim is the second man to succumb to gunshot wounds in two days, during the daytime.

Dominique Mangram, 26, was hit and killed during a shootout Monday on Hull Street Road. Two people were shot outside a convenience store, following what witnesses described as a fight between three people. Mangram's mother, Venus Mangram, says her son's loss leaves an endless void in her life.

"(Dominique) was always there if you ever needed his help with anything. Dominique was there…He loved his family," said Venus Mangram.

The group Citizens Against Crime is holding a candlelight vigil for Dominique Mangram at 6:00 p.m. Friday at Jefferson Park. Attendees are asked to bring their own candles.

The shootings come after an up-tick in violent crimes this year, which both the Richmond police chief and mayor have vowed to combat.

Anyone with information on any of these shootings is asked to call the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 804- 780-1000.
