It's probably safe to say it's officially ice cream season. But, one hot spot for the cold treat tops our list of violators from the Toledo Lucas County Health Department.
Jockos Ice Cream on south Byrne had 12 violations during inspectors visit on June 9. This included an open can of nacho cheese left sitting out at room temperature, which was 81 degrees. There were no date markings on hot dogs, sauce, or barbeque chicken. Also, the hot dog sauce is being made off premises at a house.
Tim Horton's on Glendale in Toledo had 8 violations during a visit on June 5. Inspectors say hash browns were left sitting out with no expiration marking, and dairy products like creamer and yogurt were stored at an unsafe temperature.
If you're in the mood for curly fries there is good news. The Arby's on Manhattan in Toledo was violation free during a visit on June 12.
That was not the case for Max and Erma's on Arrowhead in Maumee. There were 10 violations during inspectors visit on the June 5. This included unsafe cooler temperatures for steak, chicken, cheese, tomatoes and salad dressing. There was also dried build up on the slicer. There was also build up on cutting boards, which were so bad they need to be replaced.
Asiana Restaurant on Lewis in Toledo had 6 violations during a visit on June 13. Food was being held at an unsafe temperature and the thermometer inside the prep cooler wasn't working. Also of concern is raw chicken stored on top of beef and pork thawing at room temperature.
The Toledo Zoo is under inspection. Two restaurants racked up 10 violations total during a visit on June12. These were the Karamu BBQ and the Grill Area Café. Four of the violations were at Karamu, where cheese and barbeque sauce were being stored at unsafe temperatures. The remaining six violations were at the café, where 5 separate coolers were not cold enough to keep food at a safe temperature.
"We are dealing with some mechanical things, so there are opportunities that come up where sometimes coolers don't work the way they're suppose to. But that's what these logs are supposed to be there for. It's to go through it, make sure we're watching it, maintaining those temperatures, and if there's an issue, to get it corrected as soon as possible," said Dennis Schnurbusch, Director of visitor services, Toledo Zoo.
Mancino's Pizza and Grinders on Woodville Road in Oregon was violation free.
