Lawrence officer shoots man after birthday celebration turns violent

LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

Two Lawrence police officers are on paid leave after one of them shot a man, who was celebrating his birthday, four times in the groin area.

The 24-year-old man had been out celebrating his birthday at a Lawrence bar and his father said his son came home drunk.

When the man returned to his residence at 1103 Kasold Drive, he became embroiled in a dispute with his father. Police were called about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to the home after receiving a report of shots being fired in the area. It wasn't clear if the shots were from that home or somewhere else.

When police arrived, residents directed them to the home where the father and son were fighting. The 24-year-old man inside the residence was armed, police said.

The son then became involved in a fight with the officers.

"During the encounter, one officer discharged his firearm, striking the armed individual," according to a news release from the Lawrence Police Department.

The father said he warned his son not to reach for his shotgun during his son's encounter with the officers, but his son didn't listen to him.

After being treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, the injured man was flown by medical helicopter to a Kansas City area hospital for additional treatment.

The father said his son is in stable condition at the University of Kansas Hospital. He said he has no immediate plans to visit his son in the hospital.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation.

Residents say they are shocked by the violence in such a quiet neighborhood that includes a church across the street from the crime scene. Police were still on the scene when church members showed up for Sunday morning services, and many were shocked to see the crime tape.
