Stretch of Shawnee Mission Pkwy near I-35 closed over weekend

MERRIAM, KS (KCTV) -

Johnson County drivers, get ready for a big headache this weekend. Shawnee Mission Parkway will be closed near Interstate 35.

The work was already underway Friday night. The weekend work was likely timed to limit the impact on commuters, but that hits during the busiest hours from some of the businesses located on that stretch.

"Saturdays we will do 35 to 40 percent of our business typically," said Steve Genova, a manager at Baron BMW.

His lot has the same road closed sign as every other strip mall exit to Shawnee Mission Parkway from I-35 to Antioch Road.

Rather than gripe, though, he's taking a positive spin on the run-around that's resulted.

"I think in the last 25, 30 minutes to an hour I've seen about 40 cars drive through the lot just trying to detour themselves around the construction," Genova said.

He's hoping some of the unexpected passersby might be awestruck by the automotive scenery and take a load off long enough to be wooed into a purchase.

"They never thought they would be in the market for a BMW, but we will make it affordable for them, always," he said. "It's probably not the best day of the week to be happening, but we'll turn it into a positive and we'll figure out a way to get it done."

The roadwork began at 7 p.m. Friday and will continue through 6 a.m. Monday.

Both lanes of Shawnee Mission Parkway are closed as are the exit ramps from I-35 in both directions.
