BLUFF CITY, TN (WJHL) -

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says is man is behind bars on numerous drug charges, after officers thought the home he lived in was on fire.

Thursday, a Bluff City police officer noticed smoke coming from a home on Aberlea Place in Piney Flats. The office spoke to the residents inside the house who said the home was not on fire and the smoke was coming from a fog machine.

According to a report, the officer helped open the windows of the home to clear the smoke. It was during this time, that he found drug paraphernalia in plain view.

The officer knew the home was part of an ongoing investigation into illegal drug activity by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. So, he notified the sheriff’s office, who then responded and asked  the homowner for permission to search the home.

The homeowner cooperated with deputies and told them one of the rooms was rented out to a man named Michael Wartman.

Wartman refused to allow officers to search his bedroom, but officers said they could see a baggie of marijuana and digital scales from the doorway.

Later, detectives obtained a search warrant and executed it Friday morning.

Authorities found more than 2700 stamps of what is believed to be LSD, or acid. Also, confiscated was a drug believed to be Molly or MDMA, a baggie of marijuana, digital scales, a loaded handgun and other drug paraphernalia.

Detectives believed the LSD has a street value of $27,000.

Wartman was arrested and taken to the Sullivan County Correctional Facility on charges of possession of schedule I drugs for resale, possession of VI drugs, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling where narcotics are sold or stored.

Additional charges may be pending.
