SHERWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

Two passersby were surprised when they heard meowing coming from the engine of a car in Sherwood recently.

Jennifer Luecht and Clayton Rogers said they had to stop to get a closer look to make sure they'd heard right.

"We were looking with our cell phone lights in the car and it wasn't in the car, it was in the engine and we couldn't leave, so we called animal control," Rogers said.

"It was a really nice sports car," said Luecht. "We didn't want to touch it or hurt it at all, so we called animal services. We didn't know if they would be interested in it."

Animal control was interested, and officers showed up along with two police officers to try and get the cat out.

"They were able to break into the front of the car and they were using screwdrivers and a fireman came too, and they were all really involved in getting this cat out. It kind of blew us away," said Luecht.

Officers called the car's owner, who arrived and popped open the hood to get easier access to the cat.

Rescuers said the kitten - whom they nicknamed Lil' Motor - was scared but OK. They took him to Cat Adoption Team, where they almost immediately found him a new home.

CAT staff says Lil' Motor can go home as soon as he's neutered, but he's too thin for the surgery right now, so they're helping him gain weight before he can go live with his new family.
